A dodgy stomach and hot feet curtail Wiggle Tandem attempt

David Harmon and Jeremy Hastings were forced to abandon their Team Wiggle Tandem side-to-side record attempt this weekend Hastings was struck down with sickness and painful feet. The pair were trying to lay down the fastest time for a ride across the widest part of the UK – from Pembroke in Wales to Great Yarmouth in Norfolk – on Rocket 1, a tandem built by Dolan Bikes.
“Jez was quite sick,” says Eurosport commentator Harmon, “We don’t know why but he just had nothing in his legs and was throwing up.” Harmon says that although the pair were ahead of target for the first 150 of the 363-mile ride, Hastings illness put them under a huge amount of pressure to finish in the planned 17 hours.
“We kept to schedule until Jez started to suffer from ‘hot foot’ again,” explains Harmon. “It’s something he’s had over the past year but we thought it was sorted. He says it feels like having a knife pushed up through the sole of his foot with every pedal stroke.” Understandably, Hastings and Harmon decided to abandon and the attempt came to an end after 210 miles.
“Jez was absolutely gutted,” admits Harmon, “But we will get his foot problem sorted and ride again!”
