Team Cycling Plus will be updating you each week with the highs and lows of their training as part of the team. This week Kay develops a whole family full of triathletes…
Team Cycling Plus – Kay Bowen
My first week back at work has crowded out training a little, but running around school probably adds up to 5k a day, and I caught up with Claire, triathlete cyclist buddy whose daughter attends a local tri club, which my Hannah is keen to try out next week. Hannah has also started going to Swim Fit for kids at the gym, so clearly her strategy for spending time with her parents is ‘if you can’t beat em, join em!’ so maybe soon we will be a whole family of triathletes. My other riding buddy, Josh, is back from hols and keen to work off a little too much du pain et du vin, we set off at 7am Sunday for a sunny ride of 31 miles, taking total time of 2.5 hours. Josh started well, but after about 10 miles the pace dropped and I wasn’t going to push him – his legs were punishing him enough already – and taking it easy up the hills encouraged me in my own journey. I feel this last fortnight that something has clicked into place with me and my riding, and its less effort – I was going to say effortless but that would be over stating it. It feels easier and its fun. I don’t see it as work or a chore, although I have to say that Saturday morning’s two hour ride was altered to a short run to the gym and 40 minutes CV work as the wind was winding and the rain was raining and I didn’t fancy going out there against the elements. It’s clearly getting to that time of year when you need to layer, and short sleeve team top and shorts need to be varied with arm warmers, waterproofs and maybe even some leg covering. My feet were cold today, a first for me on the bike, do I wear thicker socks next weekend? Wished for my long fingered cosy gloves and a headband for my ears too at the start, but then it all comes off as I warm up, so I need a trailer to put all my layers in. Or do it like a triathlete, and get soaking wet and then cycle in just a tiny top and shorts for 35km with no socks on. I’ll be doing that next Sunday on the Isle of Wight, the other guys on Team Cycling Plus declined to join me on this one so its just me wearing the team colours on the island. Its the longest tri I have entered so far, and I think I’ll be out there for over 2.5 hours. Get those energy gels ready..
