“PEEEEDAL!!!”

Retro DH racing with the Black Canon Collective.
“If you haven’t got any retro DH kit or Lycra on then you’ll have to take your peak off…” BCC organiser, Andrew Denham, wasn’t messing around. Nor should a man in disturbingly snug stretch-fit Lycra with chunky plastic elbow pads mess around of course – this was retro DH racing after all…
The final round of the BCC’s Ticker Tape Winter Race Series was held last weekend so I threw the Morewood in the back of the motor and headed over to have a go. That and to remove my peak for the first and last time. Ever.
The track had a distinctly retro feel too – it was all about the corners with ‘modern’ obstacles such as jumps and drops having been left out. The premise was pretty straight forward too – the track opened at 11am and closed at 3pm so you had four hours in which to blag a timing watch and cane it home to victory!
As always with the Collective, everything was really chilled all day and the track was even dry and loamy in places. Obviously, it was a quagmire in others but come on – it’s a winter series!
Anyway, a kid called Curtis narrowly defeated seasoned pro and only man in a skinsuit, Chris Smith at the end for the win and everyone else walked away having had a brilliantly relaxed day at the races – more of this in 2011.
