Enduro maniac Matt Page shares his pick of this month’s races and challenges

In the UK, we’re lucky to have a wealth of MTB events to enter – for everyone from relative beginners to seriously tough hardcore riders. Here’s the three best happening this month. Watch out for a full first-half-of-2013 round-up in a future issue!

Something for everyone: Soggy Bottom (Joolze Dymond)

Something achievable…
Soggy Bottom XC 20 January, Newnham Park, Plymouth
Into the 10th year of the series, the popular XC race series is open to all abilities and ages 12 and up. Held at Newnham Park, a fun course is guaranteed giving everyone a chance to get some speed into the sleepy winter legs! Reasonable entry fees and no British Cycling licence required. Entry on the day is also available. It’s the perfect intro for anyone.

A bit more of a challenge…
Brass Monkeys 13 January, Tunnel Hill, Mytchett
Run by the experienced team behind the Gorrick events, the Brass Monkeys is a three-round winter enduro with the option of one-hour, two-hour or four-hour races. It’s set on a lapped course, typically longer than an average XC loop. Held just outside London, the series is always popular and all abilities can enter. Open to ages 12 and above for the one-hour, 14 and above for the two-hour and 18 and above for the four-hour. Entries are limited and available online. No licence required.

Strathpeffer: Only for the hardcore (Matt Cope)

Only for the hardcore…
Strathpuffer 26/27 January, Strathpeffer, Scottish Highlands
Infamous around the World, this is one for the crazy people! 24hrs of riding in the Scottish Highlands. Expect anything including snow, ice, rain, mud and extreme cold. It’s open to teams, pairs and soloists. 17 hours of darkness means you will need good lights though! This is the ultimate in British hardcore races, only experienced riders need apply. It might be insane, but anyone who has raced it has nothing but good things to say!

Like the sound of these? In MBUK 287 we’ll be looking at the best events happening in the UK (and wider world) over the first half of the year, with details on how – and why – you should enter!

It’ll be on sale on 8 Feb - or why not subscribe so you never miss an issue? There’s some good deals on at the moment!
