Meet Team Specialized Cycling Plus: Ken Ferguson

| Blog, Cycling Plus | 22/03/2013 13:00pm

The Team Specialized Cycling Plus quartet are cooking up a storm as they prepare for May’s Rat Race Road Trip – riding from London to Edinburgh in two days…And it’s just starting to sink in for Ken Ferguson!

Since I received the e-mail letting me know that I’d been chosen to join Team Specialized Cycling Plus for the Rat Race Road Trip I’ve gone through a roller coaster of emotions. To start with I was confident that I could meet this challenge head on with the support of the team and advice from the incredibly experienced Ben Wilson – our virtual team coach!

Ken. Not on his new Roubaix!

As if to increase the enormity of the Rat Race task,  I received an e-mail stating that the 400 mile trip from London to Edinburgh was actually 444 miles. Following this I got cold feet, quite literally, I started upping my bike commute and adding some longer endurance rides in the cold: Abandoned by my fair-weather cycling club colleagues who decided the weather was to extreme I did one four hour ride at -2 degrees!! Even with thermal socks and shoe cover my plates of meat were freezing. It took about six hours to feel my toes again!

Now the days are – in theory – starting to draw out and the weather is hopefully going to improve, I can increase my time on the road and up the intensity of the turbo sessions. I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the team and riding together the long distance event in April. This Sunday, I got up early set up the new Specialized Roubaix Sport we’ve been provided with and did a solo 100KM reliability ride. The new bike was fab!

On my original e-mail I used the words intimidating in relation to the Rat Race, I still feel the same way. This is a key motivator for me to get out there whatever the weather and get the miles in. The key challenge, though, is to remember to enjoy it.

Team Specialized Cycling Plus are being supplied bikes and kit by Specialized UK and supported by Garmin and Science in Sport.
