Rutland is one of Britain’s hidden gems with quiet roads and a plethora of cake stops. The huge man-made reservoir of Rutland Water is the icing on the cake with cycling trails, nature reserves and sailing clubs. It’s a perfect place to let the family play while you ride. It may lack the challenging hills of the Yorkshire Dales or Peak District but Velo Club Rutland helped us find enough climbs and interesting roads to offer something to cyclists of all levels.
In 1991 Johnny Marr out of The Smiths teamed up with Bernard Sumner from New Order and created the ‘supergroup’, Electronic. The idea of two of my favourite artistes getting together was incredibly exciting and I imagined that Electronic would open up new avenues of aural ecstasy. In truth, they were actually a bit average. Could the combination of Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins at Team Sky be as underwhelming?
Our two days of summer – in October naturally – have been and gone and autumn is out in force. Sadly that means thoughts turn to begrudgingly riding a bike to nowhere. Indoors.
We can’t be perfect and, very occasionally, we mess up. Witness page 140 of issue 254 and our Workshop How To. We managed to mix up our pictures… Apologies – Click on the picture below for the proper version or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll send you a PDF.
I’m off, says Paul Howard. Paris-Brest-Paris starts on Sunday night – 18:00 – but I caught the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry early yesterday to make sure I’m at the start in plenty of time for all the signing on and bike and kit checking business (also to give me some time in hand in case my ageing VW camper needs a rest on the way).
Call me cynical but there are a lot of things I don’t believe in. Wristbands that promise to “balance the body’s magnetic and electrical fields” are up there with ghosts. And unicorns.
On August 21 Paul Howard will be taking part in one of the oldest, and toughest, cycling events out there: Paris-Brest-Paris. Before he attempts to ride 1200km in less than 90 hours he looks back at the history of this brilliantly crazy event.
