The second edition of the Haute Route is underway. 780km and 19 mountains; a monumental challenge for every one of the 600 riders, it’s also a fairly substantial challenge for the 150-strong support crew. In that crew is Adam Tranter, who is taking on the 780km himself, on the back of a motorbike, which we’re fairly sure is cheating.

It’s probably just coincidence but if you swap the third and fourth letters of the biggest climb in the Wiggle Super Series Mega Meon around, it becomes Buster Hill. Truth be told Butser, as it’s called when un-anagrammed, isn’t a proper killer climb, but coming 30 miles into both the 95-mile Epic and 72-mile Standard rides this draggy ascent could still do some damage. If you’re a little out of shape then it could prove a shock to the system, but if you attack it with too much gusto (or should that be gutso?) you might regret your over-exuberance later in the ride. (Although the views and the 35mph plus descent on the other side make it worth the effort.
In light of the the hullabaloo about doping past and present I’ve found a new performance enhancing stimulant that must be as old as the hills. And legal. Its long latin name is Cuculiodes impunctatus, but most people know it as the very small but incredibly annoying biting midge.
