This summer Alan Buttler and Geoff Wiles will attempt to ride the 1955 route in memory of former Great Britain mechanic Alf Buttler.

The pair will be taking on the 2,214 kilometre 13 stage ride from Prague to Berlin and finishing in Warsaw. They aren’t just taking the gruelling challenge for fun and hope to raise money for Diabetes UK. Alf’s first race as a mechanic was the 1955 event, where Gustav-Adolf Schur became the first German to win.

The race, which hasn’t been run since 2006, began two years after World War Two ended when much of Europe was still in tatters. Behind the iron curtain Polish sport journalist Zygmunt Dall wanted to use sport to bring Poland and its neighbour, Czechoslovakia, together.

Initially Dall floated the idea of a boxing match, but thought it would be an inappropriate way to improve relations between the two neighbours. With tension between the two countries still high, Dall and Czech journalist Karel Tocl set about staging a bike race between the two countries. A compromise had to be reached on the finish location, as both wanted to crown the champions in their respective capital cities. In the end it was decided to stage two races in opposite directions.

They would both start on the 1st May with the Czech bound race ending on the 5th and the other ending on the 9th. August Prosinek was named the first Peace Race champion in Prague. Poland’s hopes of a home winner were dashed by Alexander Zoric winning the Prague to Warsaw race. Since then the race would alternate its destination each year.

So far there’s just this video to give a sneak preview of the 2013 model, which will be released in February 2012. BikeRadar, has learned however, that major sections of the gruppo have been re-engineered and that a weight saving of between 250-280g has been made. If the shifting is as good as it has been in the past that should keep the pros happy.

New kit promotes good cause – and it’s comfortable too
Out of the Saddle is the club launched and run by the famous Downing brothers, Team Sky rider Russ and Rapha-Condor-Sharp rider Dean. The main aim is to continue and step up the charity work that the brothers have done in recent years, as well as spreading the Bike-Pure anti-doping message.

This year their chosen charity is CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young. It works to raise awareness of heart conditions that can lead to Young Sudden Cardiac Death (YSCD) and Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS). Undetected heart conditions cause 12 young deaths per week and they’re a serious issue in cycling too, highlighted in 2009 by the death of Frederiek Nolf at the Tour of Qatar.

Out of the Saddle’s new club kit has just landed in our office and it’s real smart stuff. As well as the long- and short-sleeved jerseys and bibs, there’s a skin-suit, gilet, mitts and arm and leg warmers. More like a pro team wardrobe than the average club get up.

The kit is made by RST. It’s a new brand to cycling this year but it’s already on the pace thanks to the former pro and elite riders involved in the design and development, plus a background in highly engineered motorcycle kit. They’ve sought out some of the finest materials, used by the likes of Assos, and the highest spec chamois available. The full length hidden zip on the jersey is a quality touch too.

We’ve had the chance to ride in it already (race in it, actually) and we’re impressed. The chamois really delivered on RST’s promises and felt at least as comfortable as our favourite bibs.

And the best thing? This is not expensive gear. The bibs retail for £59.99, the short-sleeve jersey for £49.99. As you’re also supporting a great cause, and advocating clean cycling, that seems like a bargain to us. Get on board.

If you’re quick – and good – you can enter the club’s annual summer E/1/2 race, held on 28 August in South Yorkshire. Visit www.outofthesaddle.org.uk for more info.
